You don't deserve anything

Rants

WARNING:  Rant material ahead...

[rant]
I have always been amazed at what people will spend on themselves when they 1) don't have enough money and 2) only do it because they think they "deserve" it.

I think the average credit card debt per household in this country is floating around the $8k mark, with no signs of slowing down.  That is just credit cards, nothing at all to do with auto loans (which is in the neighborhood of $25k per household  I think), student loans, mortgage, etc.

One of the Jeep forums I occasionally visit has, for a long while, poked fun at this.  They have assigned them all the title of "How-much-a-month"ers.  And I think that pretty much sums it up.

If you ever go into a purchase and start asking "How much will this be per month?", maybe you should rethink your decision.

If you are reading this, and feel an urge to say something like "But, I work really hard and I deserve to have this _____!!!".

The truth is no, you don't.  You have to earn it.

Actually I think the average is $12,000 in debt. And that doesn't even take into account student loans, car loans or home loans. Yeah, the U.S. is screwed financially!

It's hard to watch it all happen...especially to people you know. You just want to reach out and slap some sense into them sometimes.

This is why I will never own a credit card with a credit limit above $800, at least not until I'm in my 30's and am more responsible with money. I watched a friend working for MBNA (recently bought out by Bank of America) go from a $600 credit limit to a card with a $6000 credit limit. Needless to say he was $4000 in debt within 3 weeks.

Oh and it sounds like you might like this movie (www.30kmillionaires.com) when it comes out

We're in a bit of a vicious (spelling) cycle of debt at my house. We do good on the CCs until this time of the year when money becomes short. I think right now we have about $2,500 total debt on 3 credit cards. Come March when I get some extra money from taxes and my company (knock on wood) the CCs get paid off again and the cycle starts over again next year around Oct or November. I think we do a relatively good job of CC managment but I would like to get out of this cycle. The extra money may not come someday!
